Comprehensive Exams
Dental exams are an essential factor to your child’s oral health. From his or her first visit, we will be monitoring the teeth closely to ensure we’re taking every step possible toward the ideal result. During your child’s dental exam, a hygienist will clean the teeth and check for any potential cavities or gum disease. The exam will also include x-rays (radiographs) or any other necessary diagnostic procedures.
Our caring staff takes great care to ensure that your child is comfortable and happy throughout their appointment. These appointments also give us an opportunity to explain oral hygiene to your child with the hope of instilling an affinity for oral care which will result in a healthy bite later in life.

Protective Dental Sealants
Early intervention is an important part of maintaining great oral health. As such, some of the treatment options we offer act as interceptive tactics, allowing us to nip common problems in the bud before they arrive. Protective dental sealants are an excellent example of this strategy.
A sealant is a clear or shaded plastic material that is applied to the chewing surfaces (grooves) of the back teeth (premolars and molars), where four out of five cavities in children are found. This sealant acts as a barrier to food, plaque, and acid, thus protecting the decay-prone areas of the teeth.

Sedation Dentistry
Some children are given a mild sedative, or what you may know as laughing gas, to relax them for their dental treatment. This type of pediatric sedation dentistry is performed comfortably via a small breathing mask which is placed over the child’s nose, allowing them to relax without putting them to sleep.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes this technique as a very safe, effective way of treating children’s dental needs. The gas is mild, easily taken in with normal breathing, and is quickly eliminated from the body. Your child remains fully conscious and keeps all natural reflexes.
Habit Breaking Appliances
We offer a variety of habit-breaking appliances and treatments to help break bad habits and keep your child on the right track to a gorgeous smile. These appliances break your child of bad habits by either blocking the action or helping to keep it at the top of your child’s mind to refrain, even subconsciously, such as when they are sleeping.
Bad habits such as thumb sucking can cause oral and facial issues down the road, so it’s important to get them under control early. Contact Busciglio Smiles to find out more about the habit-breaking appliances we offer.

Dental Space Maintainers
Depending on the results of your child’s exam we may need to introduce dental space maintainers, which help to prepare the patient’s bite for what’s to come. The space maintainers are aptly named, as they essentially “hold space” for the permanent teeth. They are often used when a child loses a baby tooth early, before the permanent tooth begins to erupt. This helps ensure that the permanent teeth erupt into the correct spot for the perfect bite.

Dental Care for Your Baby
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommendeds that your child see a dentist by his or her first birthday (or six months after the eruption of their first tooth, whichever one comes first). Early dental care is vital for your child’s oral health later in life.
At Busciglio Smiles, we conduct lap exams for your child’s early visits. A lap exam allows us to safely examine your child’s mouth and bite while they remain seated comfortably in your lap. During this exam, you will sit in the chair with your child seated in your lap, facing you. This keeps your child happy, comfortable, and calm while we complete the exam and provide a flouride treatment. In addition to examining your child’s mouth, lap exams help to build the trust of your child in our dentists, and allows them to become comfortable with the dental cleaning and exam process.

Emergency Care
We care about your child’s comfort and want to ensure they remain pain free. If your child faces a dental emergency during or after hours, please give us a call immediately. We are always here to assist when your child’s dental health is at risk. However, if you suspect an urgent medical emergency, please dial 9-1-1 or take your child to an emergency room.
When Should I Call for Emergency Care?
The following conditions or symptoms are a sign that your child may need emergency dental services. Call our office during regular business hours if your child is experiencing any of the following:
Toothache
First, clean the area around the tooth in question. Then, use dental floss in order to remove any food that may be lodged in the space between the teeth. Finally, have the child rinse his or her mouth with warm water. If the toothache remains, contact our office for emergency pediatric dental care. Refrain from giving the child aspirin, or from heating the area in question. Should the child’s face begin to swell, cold compresses should be applied and you should contact our office as soon as possible.
Cut or Bite of the Tongue, Lip, or Cheek
Clean the bite gently with water and use a cold compress (a cold wet towel or gauze pressed firmly against the area) to minimize bleeding and swelling. If the bleeding persists, contact Busciglio Smiles for emergency assistance.
Permanent Tooth Knocked Out
If possible, locate the tooth. Handling it by the crown rather than the root, rinse it with water but do not use soap. If the tooth is intact and contains no fractures, have the child reinsert it into the socket while holding it in place with gauze or a clean cloth. If reinserting the tooth is not an option, place the tooth in the mouth next to the cheek or place it in a cup containing milk. Do not use water. Then, contact our office immediately, as saving the tooth is time-sensitive.
Baby Tooth Knocked Out
If your child knocks a baby tooth out of his or her mouth, contact our office. Baby teeth are very different from adult teeth; in most cases they should not be replaced due to the possibility of damaging an incoming permanent tooth.
Baby Tooth is Chipped or Fractured
Please contact Busciglio Smiles.
Possible Broken or Fractured Jaw
Ensure that the jaw remains as still as possible. Take your child to the nearest hospital emergency room.
Dental Abscess
On occasion, a tooth will become infected, which can be very painful. When your child has an abscessed tooth, he or she may experience swelling in the gums, a bad taste in the mouth, or even a fever. If this is the case, call Busciglio Smiles as soon as possible as the infection can spread if left untreated.
